Top 5 BEST Places To See The Northern Lights
It’s time to check another item off your bucket list. You’ve narrowed it down to an amazing, once in a lifetime experience that you’ve been dreaming of seeing since you were a child - the Northern Lights. Everything you’ve read says that photographs don’t do this beautiful celestial display justice. It’s time to settle beneath the aurora of ever-changing lights and watch as they dance across the sky in hues ranging from red to blue, an utterly stunning display everyone should experience.
With aurora season kicking off in early fall, and with several sites to choose from, now is a great time to start planning a trip. Take an organized tour to ensure you have good odds of seeing the display, or blaze your own trail somewhere along the “aurora zone” for a more personalized experience. Either way, you need to know where to go. We’ve put together a list of places that will provide you with a brilliant show, and with enough time to plan an amazing trip.
Alaska is one of the best and well-known places on earth for spotting aurora. The cold weather, clear skies, and dark nights make for optimal aurora spotting conditions. Not a fan of the cold? No problem. Catch the beautiful aurora from the steaming Chena Hot Springs. With an abundance of wildlife including bears, moose, eagles, and a nearly endless arch of mountain ranges, Alaska has an abundance of beauty to complement the lights.
With all its vividly colored fishing villages, deep fjords, and vast nature, Norway isn’t just an aurora hotspot - it’s pure magic. Norway is one of the more convenient places to see the Northern Lights. It is easy to travel around the country and there are multiple viewing locations, which increase the probability you will spot the aurora. Because at the end of the day, it’s supposed to be a vacation and not hard work!
Iceland is known as one of the most beautiful places to visit. Not only can you spot the Aurora Borealis here, but you can enjoy Iceland’s stunning green scenery, incredible volcanic landscapes, geothermal hot springs, and majestic waterfalls. This is the perfect destination for those who are looking to enjoy the lights over an exotic landscape.
Many parts of Northern Canada witness the beautiful Aurora Borealis regularly. In fact, the northernmost territories and Yukon are some of the world’s greatest hotspots! It is not uncommon for travelers who visit Yukon in the winter months to see the northern lights more than once.
Escape to Finland this fall and enjoy all of its remote and peaceful beauty. This stunning country is one of the best places to see the northern lights. Head up to northern Finland where they shine nearly every other night. Although it can be quite cold outside, you don’t have to be. Make this unbelievable trip a warm one by staying in a world-famous glass igloo! First built in 1999, the roof of these igloos are made of thermal glass. This allows the room to remain warm while providing a clear view of the night sky. Staying in one of these igloos will be the icing on the cake for this exciting adventure and gives you amazing stories to tell all of your friends back home.
